Software Engineering Institute (SEI)

Posted by tourmamentteam on January 16, 2007

The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) is a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense and operated by Carnegie Mellon University, with offices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Frankfurt, Germany; Redstone Arsenal, Alabama; and Arlington, Virginia. The SEI publishes books on software engineering for industry, government and military applications and practices. They are most famous for the software Capability Maturity Model, (now CMMI), which identifies essential elements of effective system & software engineering processes and can be used to rate the level of an organization’s capability for producing quality software systems.

The SEI is also the home of CERT, the federally funded computer security organization. Formerly known as the Computer Emergency Response Team, CERT’s work involves handling computer security incidents and vulnerabilities, publishing security alerts, researching long-term changes in networked systems, and developing information and training to help improve security at Internet sites across the country.

The SEI has often been the site of protests against the military funding of research, as well as other issues.
